UNDERSTANDING PEER SUPPORT
Peer Support Program Overview
The Peer Support program is designed to empower individuals experiencing mental illness and/or substance use disorders by fostering a supportive environment that promotes recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, well-being, and independence. As a community-based service, the program focuses on building a strong, encouraging network to help participants take an active role in their recovery journey.
Activities and Support Services
The program offers a variety of activities tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each participant, including:

Individual Peer Support Sessions
One-on-one sessions that provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to share their experiences, challenges, and progress with a trained peer supporter who has lived experience. -
Group Support Connections
Referrals and encouragement to attend group support meetings, where participants can connect with others who have similar experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. -
Wellness and Recovery Skills
Guidance on coping strategies, wellness planning, goal setting, and relapse prevention—equipping participants with practical tools to support sustained recovery. -
Access to Community Resources
Support in navigating and connecting to essential services such as housing, education, employment, and healthcare, addressing the full spectrum of participants’ needs. -
Advocacy and Empowerment
Encouragement and coaching in self-advocacy skills, enabling participants to confidently express their needs and preferences to service providers and other community stakeholders.
